MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center is actively recruiting for a Senior Director of Nursing to promote excellence in nursing, to direct the implementation and ensure compliance with Standards of Nursing Practice/Joint Commission and all regulatory agencies that promote optimum healthcare delivery. This position will mentor and coach nurse managers, directors and assistant directors of nursing, and provide real time communications and feedback with the CNO.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Responsible for all clinical nursing services toinclude Perioperative, Cath Lab, Women's Services, and the Float pool.Facilitates delivery of patient care and assesses quality of care delivered. Implements which is to combine the communication of care to patients, doctors and families.

  1. Utilizes professional standards, regulatory standards, SMHCs mission and goals to provide quality nursing services to patients and families.
  2. Assists in the planning, organizing and directing of Nursing Services.
  3. Collaborates with the Chief Nursing Officer in defining the overall philosophy and objectives of Nursing Services in accordance with those of the hospital and interprets same to the staff.
  4. Facilitates and maintains the quality Standards of Nursing Practice within the hospital; ensures that quality improvement data is incorporated in processes that continually improve patient care.
  5. Monitors and facilitates the departmental organizational plan which is consistent with the overall hospital organization.
  6. Rounds on all patients daily and communicates with patients and their families; reviews patient census, staffing and fiscal reports.


Serves as liaison between the Department of Nursing, medical staff and support services to assess problems and concerns. Takes corrective action in conjunction with clinical departments to obtain resolution.

  1. Monitors systems and processes which impact the delivery of quality nursing care throughout the hospital.
  2. Initiates the development and implementation of policies and procedures that govern the Nursing Services.
  3. Facilitates harmonious and effective relationships and communications with the Department of Nursing and between Nursing Services and other departments.
  4. Provides guidance and counsel to administrative nurses and staff members within the Nursing Services Department.
  5. Provides adequate communication mechanisms within the Nursing Services Department and conducts regular conferences with nurse managers and supervisory personnel.
  6. Routinely provides via daily rounds, opportunities for discussion with Nursing staff and patients for problem identification and resolution and to facilitate collaborative decision making.

Facilitates and monitors the performance of personnel to assure that desired practices are maintained.
  1. Ensures processes and procedures support the implementation of standards for the evaluation of nursing performance.
  2. Collaborates with Chief Nursing Officer and Nurse Managers/Directors in planning and prioritizing budgetary recommendations.
  3. Keeps administration informed of the Nursing Services Departments activities, needs, and problems.
  4. Investigates irregularities and policy violations and takes corrective action.
  5. Reviews incident reports and directs appropriate action.
  6. Reviews patient accident reports and action taken.
  7. Inspects all department areas on a regular basis for regulatory compliance and initiates corrective action and follow-up.
Ensures interdisciplinary collaboration, strategic planning, policy development and implementation.
  1. Co-responsible for the organization of nursing including nursing vision, strategic planning, forecasting, initiating change, patient care standards, management structure, shared governance, system program development, ethical interactions, technological choices and nursing and procedures.
  2. Develops and administers nursing service goals and objectives, departmental policy and procedures and applicable governmental and accreditation regulations in collaboration with the Chief Nursing Officer.
  3. Participates in hospital planning, decision making, and policy formulation as a member of the hospital administrative team.
  4. Collaborates with the Medical Director regarding clinical aspects of patient care.
  5. Represents Nursing Services on various hospital and medical staff committees and serves as consultant to other departments as requested.
  6. Encourages nursing research and implements improved methods of patient care.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS :
  • Masters Degree in Nursing, Hospital Administration, business or a related field required.
  • Bachelors Degree in Nursing required
  • A minimum of five years managerial/administrative experience required and extensive knowledge and experience in management, health care, finance and interpersonal relations.
  • Experience managing areas of periop/cath lab/women's services/float pool

CERTIFICATION/LICENSE :
  • Maryland State Nursing License
  • Current CPR
  • Specialty Certification in Nursing Administration by a recognized accreditation board such as ANCC within 12 months of hire.
